WHAT CAN YOU DO TO ENCOURAGE GOOD PRACTICE WITH REGARDS TO INFANT FEEDING IN EMERGENCIES?

  • Be aware of existing policies and guidelines; develop your own if necessary.

  • Ensure that agency staff are aware of them and trained to implement them.

  • Monitor practices in the field, liaise with key partners and point out poor practices when observed.

  • Support programmes to protect, support and promote breastfeeding.

  • Raise awareness about the inappropriateness of donating or accepting breastmilk substitutes, bottles and teats in emergency situations.

  • Share your experiences of infant feeding programme successes and failures in emergencies with others (via the ENN Emergency Nutrition Network).

  • If you notice any violations of the International Code in emergency situations, report them immediately to the emergency coordinator and keep the evidence (for example take photos). Contact and register the case with your local IBFAN office, IBFAN-GIFA/Geneva, as well as your local emergency health coordination body.
