World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated around the world since 1992, takes place during the first week of August, although celebrations continue throughout the year in some areas.

The theme for the year is spearheaded by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) in Penang, Malaysia, with regional groups playing a pivotal role in the co-ordination of activities in their various countries.

The theme for 1998 was "Breastfeeding: The Best Investment" and aimed to initiate actions to promote, protect and support breastfeeding as one of the best investments in the health of a nation. In the WABA '98 Action Sheet, WABA cautions that "economic calculations underestimate the larger value of breastfeeding. Its economic value is only a fraction of its human welfare value."

The theme for World Breastfeeding Week 1999 is "Breastfeeding: Learning for Life," focusing on educating children, educating health professionals, and how breastfeeding enhances learning.

What ideas do you have to share? Please let us know; and it’s not too late for feedback on World Breastfeeding Week 1998.
