New Masters degree on Infant Feeding
MACONDO - the Latin American Institute for Health and Development - was recently created and it is
developing one of its first academic activities with University Galileo in Guatemala: a new Masters degree on Infant Feeding (Spanish language)

Background
In October of the year 2000 the Superior Board of Private Education of Guatemala authorized to Galileo University to open its doors. It was the result of 23 years of persistent work since 1978 as the Faculty of Systems’ Engineering, Informatics and Computation Sciences – FISSIC – that has had a decisive role in the regional modernization.
As integral part of its strategy, Galileo University has subscripted deals with foreign universities and
technology partners, creating innovative academic programs that catch one’s eye of international experts and let students to have the option of international certifications for improving their professional performance.
Its Rector, PhD Eduardo Suger Cofiño, one of the main forgers of the High National Education, has argued for years the idea that “to educate means to change views and transform lives”. Galileo University follows that mystic, knowing that the science and technology in which all its academic programs and carriers are based are only instruments because the real goal is the human growth.

Vision
To contribute of improving the health of women and children in the Latin American and Caribbean Region through the optimization of infant feeding practices.
Mission
To give to the Masters a high professional qualification for fulfil a diversity of responsibilities regarding design, planning, management, direction, assessment and advise of public policies, programs and plans of Infant Feeding at National or Regional level.
Admission Profile
University professionals from different disciplines, who can accredit at least the last year working in any health program or institution and who can exhibit curricular antecedents regarding infant feeding. To have capacity
for understanding of English language and possibilities of Internet easy access.
Aims
- To know different conceptions of the health-illnes process and the historical as well as political and ideological framework in which they emerged
- To domain the international agreements and legal instruments that give the framework for the Infant Feeding policies
- To offer the proper abilities for the clinic handle, counselling and support to breastfeeding
- To identify the importance and impact of a proper infant feeding on the mother and child health, as well as the risk derivate of wrong practices.
- To give knowledge on promotional and protective strategies of healthy practices of infant feeding
- To provide with skills and abilities for developing adequate strategies on infant feeding in special situations
- To transfer basic tools from different disciplines for managing changes at health facilities
- To acquire knowledge and abilities for generating and drive policies and programs of infant feeding
- To introduce to the students in research’s methodology and go along with them through the process
for construction and development of their research projects

Duration
2 years; 4 semesters with 6 courses each: 24 courses in total
The Masters degree will demand 720 tutorial hours and other 1440 has. for all the duties. For the final approval the students need to have approved the full programme (24 courses) and also to have presented and approved the Final Research.
