Review of INFACT Canada website by the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine
The Canadian-based Infant Feeding Action Coalition (INFACT) maintains a website that could be considered a ground zero for breastfeeding advocates who want to gain skills in breastfeeding promotion. This unembellished site begins with a general information page outlining the contents of the website, and accordingly, the scope of INFACT´s activities and goals.
The site is well organized, with the left margin buttons in neatly arranged categories, and pages that are succinctly designed and written. Many of the resources available at this website are valuable for any breastfeeding advocate who would like to gain a comprehensive understanding of the International Code of Breast-milk Substitutes, including its history, resolutions, code violations, and how to take action in response
to code violators.
Archives of INFACT´s newsletters, which contain an interesting array of political, economic, and scientific
articles on breastfeeding, are easily downloadable in pdf format or as separate articles. Another page has several professionally published fact sheets useful to clinicians with topics ranging from breastfeeding benefits to complementary feeding, kangaroo care, and breastfeeding advocacy. The fact sheets and newsletters are well written and evidence based.
The site has several items for sale under the resources button. The poster pages are fun to browse, and are
a clever way to present breastfeeding information. At the bottom of the menu bar is the search button, which opens to its own page. It would be more convenient to use the standard approach of providing the search function on every page. Some of the functions on this site perform better with Internet Explorer than Mozilla Firefox, especially the highlighting of buttons and displaying larger versions of images such as the posters.
The site includes several links to international websites related to INFACT´s activities, including its mother organization, the International Baby-Food Action Network (IBFAN), and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. This website is highly recommended as a unique and rich resource for breastfeeding political action and advocacy on many levels, from the examination room to the national government and beyond.
